Mingling Sunburst Minds is for a live performer playing flute and piccolo, accompanied by a ‘virtual ensemble’, essentially a backing track constructed from sampled and electronic sounds. Written for Harvey Abrahams, a talented high-school flautist, it highlights his easy virtuosity and showmanship, while exploring a soundscape somewhere between the real and the synthetic. The conventionality of the two main ideas - a frenetic scherzo and 'big' cantabile melody - is challenged by their interconnections and conflations in this not-quite familiar electronic world.
